December 2010 Volunteer of the Month
December 2010 - Ariel Palcon
Ariel emigrated from the Philippines to Canada in July 2009. He and his wife settled in Sherwood Park until January 2010 when they moved to Calgary “to find right jobs for us and live here for good,” as Ariel explains. After one month of living in this city, Ariel joined the Volunteer Program at Immigrant Services Calgary as an Office Support Volunteer. But this volunteer position was not enough for Ariel. Pretty soon he got engaged is different activities and departments within the Agency. Ariel has supported the Men’s Program with phoning and registering clients; has assisted special events greeting the guests, setting up and cleaning up and has helped various pilot projects with administrative tasks such as data entry. He not only brings a big smile to the agency, but also work ethic, responsibility and good initiatives.
New projects are attractive for Ariel. The Citizenship Preparation Classes needed help to develop a glossary of terms in simple English to complement the new Study Guide – Discover Canada. He happily accepted this new challenge. The staff’s feedback was “Ariel wrote such a complete glossary that it goes above expectations!” Later on, the Language Bank had an urgent need for interpretation services in Tagalog and Ariel eagerly accepted the interpretation request. The staff commented that the social worker Ariel interpreted for was highly satisfied with the service. Now Ariel is a volunteer interpreter for the agency.
“I’ve learned many things not only from the volunteering itself but also from the people surrounding me. My English language competency has gradually developed and I get to know more information and facts about Canadian living and its economy, different cultures and traditions, and I’m even more interested in social and professional activities. Volunteering played a big role with my career path. It did help me to build my confidence, self-esteem and passion to strive hard in order to achieve my goals toward building a bright future for my family.” Thank you Ariel! We are happy to have you on board and we hope to continue working with you!
