Volunteer of the Month - August 2014

Cody Olson is Immigrant Services Calgary’s Volunteer of the Month.

Volunteer of the month - August 2014Cody has been volunteering with ISC as a Cultural Translator since 2005. His duties as a Translator included translating newcomer client’s academic, legal or settlement documents. This position required excellent knowledge of the English language, great diligence in providing the most accurate translation possible, and acute attention to detail.

Cody was born and raised in Calgary. Shortly after graduating from Dr. EP. Scarlett High School, he travelled to Western Russia to spend two years as a volunteer with a religious organization. This experience made an indelible impression on Cody; he discovered first-hand the challenges of adapting to a new culture and language. Love, support, and assistance from many new Russian friends helped Cody develop a deep appreciation for Russian culture and a strong command of the Russian language.

Upon returning to Canada, Cody continued to foster his new-found interest, minoring in Russian while completing his Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of Calgary. It was during this period that Cody started volunteering with Immigrant Services Calgary as a Russian-English translator. Cody is committed to helping newcomers with their transition to Canada--like so many people did for him in Russia.

After completing his undergraduate degree, Cody worked briefly as an auditor with an accounting firm, prior to commencing his legal studies at the University of Victoria. While in law school, he continued volunteering with Immigrant Services Calgary. Cody graduated and returned to Calgary to article and practice law as a litigation associate with an international law firm.

Cody enjoys spending his spare time in the outdoors with his wife, Jasmine, and their 9-month-old daughter, Anastasia. Cody is also an avid runner, and has participated in several races throughout Southern Alberta.

Congratulation’s Cody!!!
