Volunteer of the Month - January 2011
January 2011 - Linda Zu
Linda emigrated from China to Calgary in March 2010. After a few months of settling down in the city, this newly arrived engineer decided to look for volunteer opportunities to help other immigrants, meet new people and expand her skills. In October 2010 Linda joined the Volunteer Program as a Senior’s Program volunteer.
The biggest project Linda took over was the Computer and Literacy classes for Seniors. She not only planned and wrote the content, but also facilitated them. “I taught Mandarin speaking seniors to learn basic computer skills like opening an email account, sending and receiving emails and some basic English,” explains Linda. Whoever steps in Linda’s class can see how engaged the seniors are. Her sensitivity and teaching skills help them to learn and apply their knowledge.
Linda’s talents are numerous. As soon as she heard that the Senior’s Program and the Employment Bridging Program staff needed e-portfolios, she offered her help. “This was a big challenge for me, because I had never done this sort of things before. I did a lot research and finally, I accomplished it.” The ISC staff mentions great things about Linda: “She is committed and dedicated. She always goes extra mile.” Linda is also happy to help out in the program. “I enjoy volunteer job at ISC, the colleagues and clients are all so nice, friendly and help me a lot”
Thank you Linda for all that you do!
