Volunteer of the Month June 2011

June 2011 - Tracy Ho

The After-School Program is a free community-based program that provides after school programming for children between 6 and 12 years, where a variety of after-school activities are provided to  kids in the community  in a safe environment.

It is with the help of our dedicated After-school program volunteers that we are able to provide this valuable service to the community. This month, we would like to especially recognize Tracy Ho, a hard-working and committed volunteer for the program.

Tracy’s parents moved to Canada more than 30 years ago and settled in Toronto. Tracy recognizes her parents for encouraging her to pursue her dreams of working with children. “My parents are great supporters of what I want to do and always told me to just go for what I want".  I've always enjoyed working with children and so I pursued my dreams in school”. Meanwhile, she attributes her exposure to multiculturalism to the city she was raised in: “Toronto provided many opportunities to work with a diverse community of people.  It exposed me to different cultures and traditions which helped me to better understand the different people I worked with.

After graduating from York University with a Bachelor of Psychology, and obtaining a Early Childhood Education Certificate, she started to volunteer in schools and in other organizations with children’s programs.  The opportunities she experienced expanded her passion for working with kids and affirmed her desire for this career path.

Tracy moved to Calgary last year and continued to exercise that passion through Immigrant Services Calgary’s After-school program. The staff facilitators of this program have nothing but excellent things to say about Tracy. She is commended for her positive energy and creativity, for preparing her own material ahead of time and for the sensitivity and problem-solving skills she demonstrates when approaching a child that is experiencing any kind of difficulty.

Thank you Tracy for being such a valuable part of our agency and for impacting the lives of the children in our program with your talent and enthusiasm.
