Volunteer of the Month - June 2012

June 2012 - Abeer Morsy

Abeer immigrated to Canada in 2003, bringing her incredible work and academic experiences, including over 14 years of experience in Social Work in Cairo, Egypt.  Abeer has been determined to continue working in her field. In order to meet this goal, she volunteered with different organizations, such as the Calgary Counselling Centre and the Alzheimer Society of Calgary. Abeer’s experiences recognize the value of Canadian experience for new immigrants, and also help her maintain her passion to help others.

In 2011, Abeer began volunteering with Immigrant Services Calgary’s After School Program, a free community-based program that provides after school programming for children age 6 years -12 years. The program provides a variety of after school activities, healthy snacks and homework help in a safe environment with qualified professional facilitators.

Abeer has also assisted at multiple events and workshops by helping interpret for the Arabic community. She has been our “on call” volunteer, always willing and with a big smile, ready to help! When a mother of four is able to contribute over 200 volunteer hours in less than a year, we are truly inspired!

It is thanks to people like Abeer that we can provide a service to newcomers and immigrant families, and help them make Canada a home.

Thank you Abeer!
