Immigrant Services Calgary’s Immigrant Language and Vocational Assessment – Referral Centre (ILVARC) is the only language assessment centre in Calgary that is authorized to determine eligibility for the federally sponsored Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program (free of charge for those who qualify) . Additionally, we offer a variety of other language assessments, information and referrals to various English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to help you get closer to achieving your language and career goals in Canada.
We are the only facility in Calgary that offers the Canadian English Language Benchmark Assessment for Nurses (CELBAN).
We also offer a fee-for-service assessment for non-permanent residents seeking admission into various educational programs.
ILVARC publishes a biannual Directory of ESL Programs and Services for Immigrants and International Students in Calgary.

Canadian Language Benchmarks Assessment (CLBA)
CLBA is a task-based assessment designed to determine the English as a Second Language proficiency of adults in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Canadian Language Benchmarks Placement Test (CLBPT)
CLBPT is a streamlined test referenced to the Canadian Language Benchmarks to assess ESL learners for English proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Enhanced Language Training Placement Assessment (ELTPA 6-10)
The Enhanced Language Training Placement Assessment (ELTPA 6 -10) is for placing adult newcomers, mostly internationally trained professionals and trades people, in Enhanced Language Training programs.
Canadian Language Benchmarks Literacy Assessment (CLBLA)
The Canadian Language Benchmarks Literacy Assessment is used to determine an ESL learner’s degree of literacy for the purpose of placement in an appropriate program or class. This tool has been designed to be used in conjunction with the CLBA and it is unique in its use of first-language tasks. The CLBLA is available in 27 languages.
Canadian Language Benchmarks Literacy Placement Tools (LPT)
The Canadian Language Benchmarks Literacy Placement Tools are standardized assessment tools used to determine a client’s level of English-language literacy proficiency and to facilitate initial placement of adult ESL learners into programs or classes.
Developed for and by ESL assessors and literacy practitioners, the LPT complements other CLB assessment tools for appropriate placement into ESL Literacy programs.

The Canadian English Language Benchmark Assessment for Nurses (CELBAN) is a fee-for-service assessment which determines the English language proficiency of internationally educated nurses who are applying for licensure in the nursing profession in Canada.
