EVENT DESCRIPTION
Since 1997, Immigrant Services Calgary has hosted the annual Immigrants of Distinction Awards which brings individuals, organizations, three levels of government and the community together. The gala honours the contributions and exceptional achievements of immigrants and refugees in the Calgary community through the presentation of awards and youth scholarships. Awards are presented to individuals and organizations in the areas of Arts and Culture, Business, Community Service, Distinguished Professional, Organizational Diversity and Distinguished Service. In addition, five Youth Scholarships are presented to remarkable immigrant and refugee youth.
2010 IMMIGRANTS OF DISTINCTION AWARDS
Now in its 14th year, the 2010 Immigrants of Distinction Awards will have an international flare and a greater focus on the inspiring achievements and life stories of the award recipients. The event will consist of a 1 to 1.5 hour awards presentation viewed from theatre-style seating in the Westin ballroom. A reception will follow with cuisine from around the world, a raffle and entertainment where guests and sponsors will have an exceptional opportunity to meet recipients and other guests.
WHY SUPPORT THE IMMIGRANTS OF DISTINCTION AWARDS?
Many Calgarians follow news stories and read articles about famous Canadian immigrants such as the current Governor General Right Honourable Michaelle Jean and the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson. However, the majority of media exposure received by immigrants and refugees is overwhelmingly negative despite their potential as an underutilized labour market, extensive educational backgrounds and passion to start a new life in Canada. At Immigrant Services Calgary we hear inspiring success stories of local immigrants and refugees every day.
The Immigrants of Distinction Awards share the most exceptional of these stories with those in attendance and watching on television. The awards tell of the enormous contributions that immigrants and refugees make to building our community and inspire the audience to do the same. Recognizing the recipients’ memorable achievements helps to combat stereotypes and prejudices and inform the greater community about the many barriers faced by newcomers to Canada. We are honoured to present awards to individuals and organizations that make our priorities of equity, inclusion and diversity their own. We are confident that their successes will not only inspire other new immigrants and refugees – but all Canadians.
