Immigrant Services Calgary Announces Finalists for the 2011 Immigrants of Distinction Awards

For Immediate Release (Calgary, AB Wednesday, February 9, 2011) – Immigrant Services Calgary is pleased to announce the finalists and youth scholarship recipients for the 15th annual Immigrants of Distinction Awards. The awards celebrate the outstanding achievements and contributions of immigrants to Calgary in the categories of arts and culture, business, community service, organizational diversity, and distinguished professional.

Immigrants of Distinction Awards Tickets Available

Calgary, AB, Wednesday, February 9, 2011 – Immigrant Services Calgary is pleased to announce that tickets for the 15th Annual Immigrants of Distinction Awards Gala are now available. The Gala will take place on Friday, March 18, at 6:00 pm at The Westin Calgary. The Awards Gala will have approximately 600 guests in attendance, including representatives from all three levels of government, the voluntary sector, and the business community. Tickets are $100 each, or for $850 you receive a section of 10 tickets.

Minister Ablonczy to visit Women’s Mentorship Program

Calgary, AB, Monday, August 30, 2010 --- On August 31, 2010, The Honourable Diane Ablonczy, Minister of State for Seniors, will visit Immigrant Services Calgary and the Integrated Women’s Mentorship program to make a funding announcement for Phase II of the Integrated Women’s Mentorship Program. Photo opportunities will be available. Minister Ablonczy will learn more about the program and its valuable efforts to increase fair representation of diverse women in all aspects of the Calgary community, and tour the agency.

Integrated Women’s Mentorship Program Celebrates Success

Calgary, AB, Friday, June 18, 2010 --- After four months of intense mentorship, the Integrated Women’s Mentorship Program at Immigrant Services Calgary will be hosting a wrap-up mentorship appreciation event on Wednesday, June 23, 2010. The event will celebrate the successes and achievements of the hard working volunteer mentors and their mentees over the last four months. 23 out of 30 participants in the Integrated Women’s Mentorship Program found meaningful employment during their mentorship or returned to school. The event will share success stories of participants, and include entertainment and refreshments.

Immigrant Services Calgary hosts 33rd Annual General Meeting

Calgary, AB, Monday, June 14, 2010 --- Immigrant Services Calgary is pleased to announce the 33rd Annual General Meeting with the theme of “Identity and Dignity”, will take place on June 17, 2010. The Honourable Jean Augustine, PC, CM, BA, M.Ed., LLD (HON), Fairness Commissioner for Ontario, will be the keynote speaker. Ms. Augustine, the first African-Canadian woman to be elected to the House of Commons, will speak about the importance of identity, fairness, and dignity for immigrants in Canada. 

Premier Ed Stelmach and other Distinguished Guests Announce Attendance at 2010 Immigrants of Distinction Awards

Calgary, AB, Friday, February 26, 2010 – Immigrant Services Calgary is extremely pleased to announce that the Honourable Ed Stelmach will be attending the 2010 Immigrants of Distinction Awards on Friday, March 19, at 7 pm at The Westin, Calgary.  Joining him will be the Honourable Thomas Lukaszuk, Minister of  Employment and Immigration Services, as well as the Honourable Yvonne Fritz, Minister  of Children and Youth Services.

Resource Centre for Immigrant Women Launched

Calgary, AB, Wednesday, April 7, 2010 --- Immigrant Services Calgary is pleased to announce the official launch of the Integrated Women’s Mentorship Program Resource Centre. At a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, March 26, mentees, mentors and sponsors gathered to celebrate the empowerment of professional immigrant and refugee women. The thought-provoking ceremony dealt with issues such as diversity, the negative effects of racism, the role of women in migration, and the enhancement of family harmony; all issues that immigrant women deal with every day.

 

Youth Combating Racism in Calgary

Calgary, AB, Monday, December 3, 2009 --- Despite Calgary’s continuous efforts to be an inclusive community, it is undeniable that many issues related to racism and human rights still exist among its population. Calgary’s youth are vulnerable to these issues and there is evidence that discrimination leads to more complex and severe issues such as marginalization, isolation and, in extreme cases, gang involvement. Youth fostering change is an important strategy in combating these issues, as they often understand and connect with those tangled in these matters better than their elders.

Connecting Immigrant Children to Calgary

Calgary, AB, Tuesday, January 19, 2010 --- Immigrant Services Calgary is pleased to announce the Mosaic After-School Program. The program provides daily after-school activities for immigrant and refugee children between the ages of six to twelve, in conjunction with the Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre.

2010 Immigrants of Distinction Award Finalists

Calgary, AB, Monday, February 8, 2010 -- The Immigrants of Distinction Awards celebrates the outstanding achievements and contributions of Immigrants in Calgary and area in the fields of Arts and Culture, Business, Community Service, and Distinguished Professional. The esteemed Hadassah Ksienski Award will also be presented this evening. The IDA also recognizes organizations and businesses that strive to make diversity and inclusion a priority in their workplace, and highlights the achievements of immigrant youth.
