Youth Combating Racism in Calgary
Calgary, AB, Monday, December 3, 2009 --- Despite Calgary’s continuous efforts to be an inclusive community, it is undeniable that many issues related to racism and human rights still exist among its population. Calgary’s youth are vulnerable to these issues and there is evidence that discrimination leads to more complex and severe issues such as marginalization, isolation and, in extreme cases, gang involvement. Youth fostering change is an important strategy in combating these issues, as they often understand and connect with those tangled in these matters better than their elders.
Immigrant Services Calgary is pleased to announce the Race for Rights Conference, a youth anti-racism and human rights conference on December 5th, 2009 at the Kahanoff Centre. Race for Rights aims to ignite youth activism for human rights and against racism in the local community. Teens between the ages of 14 and 18 will have the opportunity to discuss how “Every Step Makes a Difference”, and how to take action on the issues surrounding racism and to see how they can make a difference.
