Your Mental Health & Daily Needs
Everyone reacts differently to stressful situations. How you respond to the outbreak depends on your background, experiences, and current situation. It is important to target 5 human needs daily to maintain your wellness and mental balance (social, emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual).
A few things you can do to support yourself:
Stick to your routine. Try to wake up/go to bed at the same time, follow same meals breaks, etc.
Use the time to do something you always wanted to do: read a book, watch a movie, learn a new skill. Try to do some other activities you enjoy. Create family/ individual fun activity jar where you and whoever live with you put notes on the jar with daily fun activities.
Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including social media. Hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting.
Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals, if possible.
Exercise regularly. Get outside, if you can. You can still practice social distancing and go around the block.
Get plenty of sleep, and avoid alcohol and drugs.
Connect with others. Talk with close ones about your worries and how you are feeling. Stay in touch with family and friends using e-mail, social media, video conference and telephone.
Practicing gratitude by focusing on what you have.
Take care of your body. Take deep breaths, stretch, or meditate.
When experiencing anxiety, practice mindfulness, deep breathing, or Progressive Muscle Relaxation. There are many resources online.
