14 Tips and Exercises For Your Mental Health & Daily Needs

Your Mental Health & Daily Needs

Everyone reacts differently to stressful situations.  How you respond to the outbreak depends on your background, experiences, and current situation. It is important to target 5 human needs daily to maintain your wellness and mental balance (social, emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual). 

A few things you can do to support yourself: 

  • Stick to your routine. Try to wake up/go to bed at the same time, follow same meals breaks, etc. 

  • Use the time to do something you always wanted to do: read a book, watch a movie, learn a new skill. Try to do some other activities you enjoy. Create family/ individual fun activity jar where you and whoever live with you put notes on the jar with daily fun activities.                    

  • Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including social media. Hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting. 

  • Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals, if possible. 

  • Exercise regularly. Get outside, if you can. You can still practice social distancing and go around the block.  

  • Get plenty of sleep, and avoid alcohol and drugs. 

  • Connect with others. Talk with close ones about your worries and how you are feeling. Stay in touch with family and friends using e-mail, social media, video conference and telephone.  

  • Practicing gratitude by focusing on what you have.  

  • Take care of your body. Take deep breaths, stretch, or meditate.  

  • When experiencing anxiety, practice mindfulness, deep breathing, or Progressive Muscle Relaxation. There are many resources online.

Multicultural In-Home Support Program - This is a free program, offered in multiple languages which provides in-home support to help families develop healthy relationships.

Become a Better You - This program provides professional counselling in multiple languages to help with challenges in personal and family relationships.

Supported Visitation for Diverse Populations - This program aims to serve families who have children currently living in foster homes. [Currently Postponed]

Psychotherapy & Counselling Services - Individual and group counselling services available in multiple languages. This service is available to immigrants as well as Canadian citizens.
