Zeyu Zhang – Volunteer of the Month for May 2022

Zeyu Zhang was drawn to volunteer with Immigrant Services Calgary (ISC) as he wanted to help and empower immigrants and refugees with whom he felt a connection. He immigrated to Canada at an early age and could relate to the newcomers' journey in their new home, including the unique challenges they have to overcome. He volunteered in multiple roles at ISC, most recently assisting the client care team. Zeyu demonstrated professionalism and reliability in his administrative responsibilities. He also helped clients by greeting and assisting them with their inquiries and appointments and providing interpretation for clients with a language barrier. Zeyu has completed over 80 hours as an ISC volunteer, and we are very thankful for his contributions to unleashing the potential of newcomers to Canada! This is his story:

“I heard about ISC through a volunteer fair at my school. What attracted me to ISC was its focus on helping immigrants integrate into Canadian society. Having immigrated to Canada at nine years old, it was easy for me to relate to newcomers and the challenges faced when coming to a new country. Volunteering is both about giving back to the community and a way to develop your skills. I recently finished my Bachelor of Business Administration at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. I really appreciated the opportunity to volunteer with ISC, especially in the client care representative role. You can really feel that you’re making a difference since you’re the first point of contact. Although I recently found a job, I would love to volunteer again in the future if my time aligns.”

“We have truly enjoyed having Zeyu as one of our client care volunteers. He is punctual, reliable, and committed to helping newcomer families build their life in Canada. He has been a delight to work with!”
