Furtuna Desalegne – Volunteer of the Month for October 2025

Furtuna Desalegne is originally from Eritrea and moved to Canada at the end of October 2024. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics. She brings extensive professional experience in communications and marketing, working with global non-profit organizations such as World Vision and the Norwegian Refugee Council.
She first learned about Immigrant Services Calgary (ISC) through its settlement and language assessment programs for newcomers. As a new arrival, she found ISC’s support invaluable. From language assessments and employment resources to guidance on housing, healthcare, and community services, these programs helped her build a foundation for life in Calgary.
Inspired by the impact ISC had on her own settlement journey, Furtuna decided to give back by volunteering. She has supported various community events, provided interpretation in Tigrigna and Amharic, and contributed her skills to the ISC communications department.
“What I enjoy most about volunteering is the sense of connection and purpose,” she shared. “Being able to give back to a community that supported me and help others feel at home in Calgary is incredibly meaningful.”
Even while working full-time in Human Resources, Furtuna continues to volunteer. She believes that giving her time is a powerful way to build community, develop new skills, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
“Fortune brought creativity and professionalism to our communication team. From supporting content development to contributing to our holiday calendar, her work reflected her strong commitment to community,” - Sania D’Silva, Community Engagement Specialist.
