Luis’s Story: Finding Hope, Purpose, and a Future in Calgary

When Luis arrived in Canada as a permanent resident under the Refugee Protection Class, he brought determination, ambition, and the hope of building a new life. But like many newcomers, he faced uncertainty about how to restart his career in a new country.
In August, shortly after receiving his permanent residency, Luis booked a one-on-one education counselling session with Immigrant Services Calgary. His goal was clear: to secure meaningful work in the IT field. Together with his counsellor, he explored training options through Manpower and Momentum, carefully comparing timelines, curriculum, and the specific skills each program would help him build.
They also discussed practical tools, job-search channels, and strategies to help Luis navigate Calgary’s competitive labor market. With this guidance, he was ready to move forward but faced a common challenge: long waitlists for the training programs he wanted.
Instead of losing momentum, Luis made a pivot. Drawing on the resources and insights from his counselling session, he threw himself into job applications. His persistence and strategic approach paid off quickly: by November, just three months later, he had landed a rewarding IT position.
Today, Luis is not only thriving professionally but has come full circle: he now works as a Client Care Representative on ISC’s team, using his own experience to support other newcomers. His transformation from newcomer to colleague is a powerful example of what’s possible when newcomers receive timely guidance, practical tools, and unwavering support.
Luis’s story perfectly illustrates the heart of our Unleashing Potential campaign: when newcomers are equipped with the right resources and encouragement, they gain the confidence to build strong, successful futures in Canada.
