Porfirio Gutierrez – Volunteer of the Month for December 2025

Porfirio Gutierrez is originally from Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico. He moved to Canada in 2024 and began building his new life in Calgary, driven by a strong desire to support others on a similar journey.
He first learned about Immigrant Services Calgary through the documents he received with his permanent residency. After completing his Gateway session, he recognized that ISC’s work closely reflected the support he had provided in his home country by helping people connect with essential resources and services.
Porfirio has been volunteering with ISC since October 2024 and has supported the Welcome Centre since August 2025. To date, he has completed 102 hours of volunteer work. As part of the Client Care team, he enjoys welcoming newcomers, answering their questions, and helping them feel more at ease during what can often be a stressful transition. Supporting Spanish-speaking clients is especially meaningful to him, as he understands the fear that can come with navigating services in a new language.
He speaks English, Spanish, and Mexican Sign Language, and is currently learning American Sign Language. His calm, welcoming presence helps newcomers feel understood and reassured from the moment they arrive.
Before coming to Canada, Porfirio completed a Bachelor’s degree in Administration and Finance and a Master’s degree in Business Administration with a specialization in Finance. He previously worked as a university and high school instructor, supported education and industry partnerships, and helped small businesses strengthen their operations. He was also involved in community and inclusion initiatives, including supporting individuals with hearing disabilities.
He plans to continue volunteering with ISC. Giving back allows him to offer the same kindness, guidance, and encouragement that once supported him as a newcomer.
“We truly appreciate Porfirio’s welcoming and reliable presence at the front desk of Immigrant Services Calgary. His dedication has made a real difference for newcomers and our community.”
