Sophia’s Journey with Gateway

When Sophia Barrun first connected with Gateway at Immigrant Services Calgary, she hoped to find a footing in a new city. Through her personalized plan, she was introduced to programs and services that became the first step toward building her future in Calgary.

With Gateway’s referral, Sophia joined the EYE Program at the Immigrant Education Society, where she gained skills, built networks, and completed a practicum that led to her current part-time role at the Alberta Business and Health Institute. Gateway also connected her to VolunteerConnector, where she began volunteering at Father Lacombe Care Society and CareWest, opportunities that gave her joy, purpose, and experience aligned with her dream of becoming a nurse.

Her plan guided her further: filing her taxes and applying for GST/HST credits, accessing the Fair Entry program through the Korean Social Services Centre, and even beginning French classes through Cité des Rocheuses.

Sophia’s dedication and Gateway’s support paved the way for academic success. This September, she began her studies in the Bachelor of Nursing program at Mount Royal University, an achievement that once seemed out of reach.

Sophia’s journey embodies the spirit of the Unleashing Potential campaign: when newcomers receive timely guidance, tailored resources, and continuous support, they gain the confidence and tools to build strong, fulfilling futures in Canada.

“The personalized plan and support I received paved the way for opportunities, assistance, and encouragement as a newcomer. It gave me hope for my future in Calgary.” – Sophia Barrun
