Zhanna Ivanenko-Volunteer of the Month for January 2025

Zhanna Ivanenko arrived in Canada from Ukraine in February 2024.

While looking for a job, a career coach suggested that Zhanna try volunteering. This would help her meet new people, gain experience, and demonstrate her skills. Zhanna followed this advice and applied to volunteer with Immigrant Services Calgary (ISC).

She joined the volunteer team in July 2024 and has contributed over 142 hours to ISC’s Interpretation and Translation Centre. Zhanna speaks four languages—English, Korean, Ukrainian, and Russian—and supports newcomers with their interpretation and translation needs.

Zhana enjoys a strong sense of community and belonging at ISC. She feels good knowing that her efforts help improve other people’s lives. “Knowing that in my little way, I can contribute to someone’s life is fulfilling,” she said.

Mihaela Turtureanu, manager of the Interpretation & Translation Centre at ISC, commends Zhanna for her positive attitude and support for newcomers. “Zhanna’s commitment to helping others and her welcoming attitude make her stand out.”

Zhanna wants to keep volunteering because it makes her happy and confident. She encourages others to try volunteering too, as it helps them meet people with similar interests and improve their social skills.
