WelcomeWell Program Connects Newcomer Families to Healthcare and Community Support

For many newcomer families, navigating a new healthcare system can be confusing and overwhelming — especially when language and access barriers are involved. That’s why Immigrant Services Calgary (ISC) is proud to collaborate with London Drugs in launching the WelcomeWell program: a new initiative supporting newcomers in accessing essential healthcare services and building confidence in their healthcare journey.
What is WelcomeWell?
Launched on June 10, 2025, WelcomeWell is a community-focused health navigation initiative created by London Drugs in partnership with local newcomer agencies across Alberta. The program provides newcomers a personalized introduction to London Drugs pharmacy services and healthcare professionals.
The initiative highlights the essential role pharmacists play in diagnosing and treating minor health conditions, helping ease pressure on the broader healthcare system, and fostering long-term trust between pharmacists and newcomer communities.
ISC Clients Among the First to Benefit
At the inaugural event, ISC newcomer families — specifically clients from the Community Action Program for Children (CAP-C) — participated in a guided session hosted at a local London Drugs store. Clients received:
- An overview of health services available in pharmacies
- Guidance on prenatal and child health care
- Information on supplements and over-the-counter medications
- Support from multilingual pharmacists and health professionals
“This is a great resource that we can use to let families know they can come here if they have questions about medication or care or if there’s a language barrier,” said Rebeca Andrada, Outreach Manager at Immigrant Services Calgary. “Overall, it’s going to improve the service delivery for our health services in Alberta, and it’s a great resource for [newcomers] to access.”
What Newcomers Can Expect from WelcomeWell:
- Friendly guidance in a stress-free environment
- Pharmacist-led care for minor health conditions
- Support for newcomers without a family doctor
- Advice on navigating the Canadian healthcare system
- Free health supplies and educational resources
This culturally sensitive, personalized approach ensures newcomer families feel welcomed, informed, and empowered to manage their health needs in their new home.
