Stampede Spirit at Your Doorstep: A Welcoming Tradition for Newcomer Families

Western hospitality rolled into the heart of our neighbourhoods!

This June, over 100 newcomers across Calgary experienced a true taste of western hospitality — right in their own communities — thanks to the Stampede Neighbourhood Pop-Ups, a heartwarming collaboration between Immigrant Services Calgary and the Calgary Stampede.

What began during the COVID-19 pandemic as a creative way to connect and bring joy to newcomer families has now become an annual tradition. This initiative brings the Stampede spirit — complete with horses, mascots, volunteers, and Stampede royalty — to families who may be experiencing this iconic Calgary event for the very first time.

Building Community, One Pop-Up at a Time

At each pop-up, children laughed, families smiled, and new neighbours connected. Beyond the cowboy hats and rodeo flair, the real magic was in the sense of belonging. These visits aren’t just entertaining — they’re a powerful gesture of inclusion.

Through these pop-ups, newcomers are introduced not only to a beloved Calgary tradition but to the community spirit that defines our city.

"I never imagined seeing horses and Stampede royalty in our neighbourhood!" said one newcomer parent. "My kids were so excited — it made us feel truly welcome in Calgary."

Countdown to the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth

As we prepare for The Calgary Stampede Parade on July 4, these neighbourhood pop-ups are the perfect kickoff to the celebrations. Whether it’s your first Stampede or your fiftieth, this is the time of year when community, culture, and connection shine brightest.
